Observations from Hokies' weekend in Norfolk

In no particular order:

1. Starting pitching is impressive. Long and loose arms, lots of confidence, strong command. Great work in 40 degree weather. I expect some strengthening as temps warm up. Strong second level to build on for future. McGarity in good role, hope he gets lots of work as closer and stays healthy.

2. Scheetz had a pretty good ODU team baffled for seven innings.

3. Infield defense looks better suited for home turf. Interesting angles of approach taught to infielders, MIF take almost a 30 degree drop with left foot to field ground ball just inside left ankle. I've not seen it that exaggerated.

4. Dauby at 2B made a couple of sparkling plays to his left.

5. Sciretta, Ponzurick, and Fragale can flat out mash the ball.

6. Freiday, Jr. has an absolute cannon for an arm. Great footwork.

7. Mairoana DH'ing as freshman has been impressive. Saw him in high school and didn't quite see this role coming so soon. Great start for him.

8. I'd like to see some better/smarter plate discipline top to bottom. It's one approach with a 16 run lead, it's another level of higher baseball IQ in a tight game. Friday's rally cut short with some odd approaches and consecutive first pitch swings to start the ninth.

9. Overall, Hokies are a very conservative baserunning team. Not too many speed merchants. Jenco ran into a bad out to choke a rally on Friday. Maybe this warms up with the weather too.

10. I really don't like cream colored unis. Always thought it looked like perpetually dirty high school baseball laundry. Please go with gray/road and snow white/home.
